What Maryland actually gives you

You swim two loops in the brackish, tidal Choptank River, ride two flat laps through rural Dorchester County and the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, then run three flat laps along the river and through downtown Cambridge. The organiser calls the bike course flatter than flat, and that is the whole problem. Nothing on this course forces you to slow down, so the discipline has to come from you.

Two loops, and a tide that changes direction

    Loop one, against the tide

    Expect the outbound leg to feel slow

    The 2026 swim runs on an outgoing tide, so the outbound leg is against a slight current. It will feel slower than your pool pace suggests. That is the course, not your fitness, so hold effort rather than chasing the clock.

    • Judge by effort, not by split
    • Sight often so the current does not push you wide

    Loop two, with the tide

    Take the free speed without spending more

    The inbound leg runs with the current. Let it give you the time back rather than pressing harder because the water suddenly feels easier.

    The course leaves Cambridge for open wetland roads with almost no elevation change. With no hills to check you, it is easy to settle 15 watts too high without noticing. Pick your ceiling in the first half hour and treat it as fixed.

    The Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is open marshland with very little to block the wind. A headwind section costs more here than the same wind would on a sheltered course, and the return leg gives it back.

    The second lap repeats the same flat roads. This is the point where a bike that felt easy starts to show up, and where riding to the same ceiling protects the marathon. The course is not fully closed, so keep paying attention to traffic.

    The run is flat from start to finish, which removes every natural excuse to slow down. Start slower than feels right. A flat marathon punishes an early mistake for longer than a hilly one does.

    Spend whatever an honest bike left you

    The last lap finishes along the historic Long Wharf on the Choptank. If you held your bike ceiling on both laps, this is where that discipline pays. If you did not, this is where a flat course stops helping.

How the model works

It starts with the targets in your Race Card, then samples the parts of a full distance that vary: open-water pace, transitions, bike speed at the planned power, and the drop in run performance after the swim and bike. Repeating that calculation produces a likely range rather than a single heroic number.

The current time calculation uses this race’s published distances, or standard full distance distances where none are published, with the available course headings, elevation and exposure evidence. Weather scenarios vary temperature, dew point, wind, gusts, rain and water conditions together. Unknown route detail stays visible as uncertainty rather than false precision.

It is not predicting your exact finishing time, placing, or race-day weather. It answers a narrower question: given the plan and the information we have, what range of day is plausible, and where is the uncertainty coming from?

Confidence is not a permanent “low”. It is recalculated across four separate inputs:

  • Your evidence: consistent inputs and recent race-like swim, bike, and run results.
  • Bike setup: measured or specified aerodynamics rather than a broad prior.
  • The course: verified distance and route character, including elevation and technical sections.
