Add only the evidence you have. Every control changes a discipline range, its uncertainty, or an execution-risk explanation.

Swim evidence

Replaces the broad pool-to-open-water assumption.

Bike and equipment

These replace broad mass, aerodynamics, tyre, and power-to-speed assumptions.

Run evidence

A recent effort and honest durability/acclimation answers refine the post-bike run.

Race execution

Transition proficiency changes the T1/T2 range and how wet conditions are treated.

What California actually gives you

You swim point to point down the American River into the Sacramento River, exiting near Tower Bridge, then ride two flat loops through delta farm and wine country, then run two flat loops on the River Walk Trail and through Old Sacramento to finish on Capitol Mall. The organiser sells this as a personal-best course and it genuinely is one. The two things that decide your day are the cold water at the start and whether you can leave the bike alone on a course that never asks you to.

A point-to-point downriver swim in water the organiser puts at around 17 degrees, so the cold matters more here than the distance does.

Where these course facts come from

These facts come from the organiser’s latest published material: swim, 2026 current route; bike, 2026 current route; run, 2026 current route. They describe the character of the course. They do not confirm the final 2026 route.

How I’d want you to race it

One job for each part of this course. The distance markers tell you when the job changes. The course tells you why.

Swim

Cold first, fast second

  1. 0–3800 m

    Downriver to Tower Bridge

Get your breathing under control before you race

The organiser puts average water temperature around 17 degrees, cold enough that the first minutes can feel like you cannot breathe properly. The current is helping you, so there is no reason to fight. Settle, then swim.

    • Expect the first two minutes to feel bad
    • Let the current do the work

Bike

Two flat loops, one number

  1. 0 km45 km

    Out into the delta

Pick your ceiling before the loop repeats

Flat farmland with nothing to interrupt you. This is where a number that is 10 watts too high feels completely sustainable, and where that decision is actually made.

    • Cap power in the first 30 minutes
    • Start fuelling early
  2. 45 km90 km

    Closing loop one

Finish lap one the way you mean to ride lap two

The delta is open enough that wind, not gradient, is the variable. Hold power rather than speed if it picks up, and close the first loop at the effort you intend to repeat.

    • Ride the wind on power
    • Stay on the fuelling schedule
  3. 90 km180.2 km

    Lap two

Match lap two to lap one exactly

This is the honest half. A flat second lap at the same power is what leaves a flat marathon intact, and riding it faster is the single most common way this race is lost.

    • Compare lap two power to lap one
    • Finish nutrition before T2

Run

A flat marathon hides nothing

  1. 0 km10.55 km

South on the River Walk Trail

Start slower than a flat course invites

The run opens along the Sacramento River on flat trail. There is no climb anywhere to force a correction, so the correction has to be a decision you make in the first kilometre.

    • Hold opening pace for 5 km
    • Shorten stride out of T2
  2. 10.55 km21.1 km

    North under the bridges

Use the bridges as your checkpoints

The loop passes under Tower Bridge and I Street Bridge and out toward Discovery Park. Fixed landmarks on a flat course are the most useful pacing check you have here.

    • Check pace at each bridge
    • Take aid on schedule
  3. 21.1 km31.65 km

    Lap two begins

The second lap tells the truth about the bike

Repeating the same flat loop gives a clean read. If lap two is already slipping, the bike was ridden too hard, and the job now is managing the fade rather than fighting it.

    • Compare lap two to lap one
    • Adjust deliberately
  4. 31.65 km42.2 km

    Old Sacramento to Capitol Mall

Spend what an honest bike left you

The finish runs through Old Sacramento along Front Street and up Capitol Mall to the State Capitol. On a course this flat, whatever you held back on the bike is still available here.

    • Decide the finish honestly
    • Run the last kilometres on effort

What I would keep an eye on

There is no useful 2026 forecast this far out. For now, past race dates give us a point of reference. Closer to the race, the forecast will tell us whether the plan needs changing.

What goes into your range

Your CSS, FTP, weight and run threshold create the first range. Open-water, bike, run and execution evidence can replace broad assumptions. Course data and the historical conditions baseline shape every simulation.

Builds with equipment, mass, aero and tyre detail

How the model works

It starts with the targets in your Race Card, then samples the parts of a full distance that vary: open-water pace, transitions, bike speed at the planned power, and the drop in run performance after the swim and bike. Repeating that calculation produces a likely range rather than a single heroic number.

The current time calculation uses this race’s published distances, or standard full distance distances where none are published, with the available course headings, elevation and exposure evidence. Weather scenarios vary temperature, dew point, wind, gusts, rain and water conditions together. Unknown route detail stays visible as uncertainty rather than false precision.

It is not predicting your exact finishing time, placing, or race-day weather. It answers a narrower question: given the plan and the information we have, what range of day is plausible, and where is the uncertainty coming from?

Confidence is not a permanent “low”. It is recalculated across four separate inputs:

  • Your evidence: consistent inputs and recent race-like swim, bike, and run results.
  • Bike setup: measured or specified aerodynamics rather than a broad prior.
  • The course: verified distance and route character, including elevation and technical sections.
  • The conditions: a current forecast is more useful than a historical comparison.

It starts low when those inputs are broad. It can become moderate or high as the evidence improves. A narrower range means better information, not a guarantee.

If California is your race

Your range is built on today’s numbers. The months of training before race day decide what those numbers become.
