Add only the evidence you have. Every control changes a discipline range, its uncertainty, or an execution-risk explanation.

Swim evidence

Replaces the broad pool-to-open-water assumption.

Bike and equipment

These replace broad mass, aerodynamics, tyre, and power-to-speed assumptions.

Run evidence

A recent effort and honest durability/acclimation answers refine the post-bike run.

Race execution

Transition proficiency changes the T1/T2 range and how wet conditions are treated.

What Canada-Ottawa actually gives you

You swim one loop in the Ottawa River from Britannia Park, then ride 2.75 loops on fully closed roads past Parliament Hill and the Supreme Court and out into quieter countryside, then run a flat marathon through downtown Ottawa to finish at Major's Hill Park beside the Parliament of Canada. Closed roads and mild elevation make this a fast day. The unusual thing to plan for is the bike's 2.75 loops, which is just irregular enough to catch people out.

Where these course facts come from

These facts come from the organiser’s latest published material: swim, 2027 current route; bike, 2027 current route; run, 2027 current route. They describe the character of the course. They do not confirm the final 2027 route.

How I’d want you to race it

One job for each part of this course. The distance markers tell you when the job changes. The course tells you why.

Swim

One loop, and a shuttle morning

  1. 0–3800 m

One loop of the Ottawa River

Settle early after an early shuttle

A single-loop river swim from Britannia Park, reached by shuttle from downtown in the dark. After a broken morning, the priority is getting into a rhythm rather than racing the first few hundred metres.

    • Settle by 400 m
    • Swim your own effort off the start

Bike

Two and three quarter loops

  1. 0 km60 km

    Loop one through the city

Closed roads are not a reason to ride harder

The course runs fully closed past Parliament Hill, the Supreme Court and the river. Smooth, traffic-free road at speed is where a slightly high number feels completely sustainable. Fix the ceiling here.

    • Cap power in the first 30 minutes
    • Start fuelling early
  2. 60 km120 km

Loop two, out into the countryside

Mild elevation still adds up over 180 km

The route leaves the landmarks for quieter open landscape. The organiser calls the elevation changes mild, which is true per rise and misleading over three passes.

    • Hold power over the rises
    • Compare loop two to loop one
  3. 120 km180 km

    The final three-quarter loop

Count the course, not the laps

This is a 2.75-loop course, so the last pass is a partial one and does not finish where the others did. Know that in advance rather than discovering it at 150 km when you expected to be nearly home.

    • Ride to distance, not to landmarks
    • Finish nutrition before T2

Run

Flat streets, no excuses

  1. 0 km14 km

    Into downtown Ottawa

Flat means you have to hold yourself back

The marathon is flat through a busy downtown with heavy support. Nothing in the terrain will slow you down, so the first few kilometres have to be a decision.

    • Hold opening pace for 5 km
    • Shorten stride out of T2
  2. 14 km28 km

    Through the city

The middle is where the bike shows up

On a flat course, the halfway point gives an honest read on whether the closed-road bike was ridden sensibly. Adjust here rather than at 35 km.

    • Reassess pace honestly at halfway
    • Take aid on schedule
  3. 28 km42.2 km

    To Major's Hill Park

Spend what a disciplined bike left

The finish is at Major's Hill Park beside the Château Laurier and the Parliament of Canada. On flat ground, whatever the bike did not take is still available here.

    • Decide the finish honestly
    • Run the last kilometres on effort

What I would keep an eye on

There is no useful 2027 forecast this far out. For now, past race dates give us a point of reference. Closer to the race, the forecast will tell us whether the plan needs changing.

What goes into your range

Your CSS, FTP, weight and run threshold create the first range. Open-water, bike, run and execution evidence can replace broad assumptions. Course data and the historical conditions baseline shape every simulation.

How the model works

It starts with the targets in your Race Card, then samples the parts of a full distance that vary: open-water pace, transitions, bike speed at the planned power, and the drop in run performance after the swim and bike. Repeating that calculation produces a likely range rather than a single heroic number.

The current time calculation uses this race’s published distances, or standard full distance distances where none are published, with the available course headings, elevation and exposure evidence. Weather scenarios vary temperature, dew point, wind, gusts, rain and water conditions together. Unknown route detail stays visible as uncertainty rather than false precision.

It is not predicting your exact finishing time, placing, or race-day weather. It answers a narrower question: given the plan and the information we have, what range of day is plausible, and where is the uncertainty coming from?

Confidence is not a permanent “low”. It is recalculated across four separate inputs:

  • Your evidence: consistent inputs and recent race-like swim, bike, and run results.
  • Bike setup: measured or specified aerodynamics rather than a broad prior.
  • The course: verified distance and route character, including elevation and technical sections.
  • The conditions: a current forecast is more useful than a historical comparison.

It starts low when those inputs are broad. It can become moderate or high as the evidence improves. A narrower range means better information, not a guarantee.

If Canada-Ottawa is your race

Your range is built on today’s numbers. The months of training before race day decide what those numbers become.
