IRONMAN 70.3 Nelson Mandela Bay.
Your best day in Gqeberha.

Hobie Beach puts the ocean first, and the coastal roads towards Marine Drive keep the sea close throughout the bike. It is a proper African Championship course, which is no reason to turn the opening ride into a show of strength.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Gqeberha could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

The coastline is a place to manage effort, not display it.

Hobie Beach starts a championship race with the sea in front of you, then Marine Drive and the coastal roads ask for a controlled bike effort. The beachfront run is where you can finally use that restraint. The final 2027 turn and lap details still need their map.

Hobie Beach, Algoa Bay swim

Take time to find a reliable sea stroke

The calm bay swim rewards an honest, controlled opening.

Seed honestly. Settle into rhythm.

Marine Drive coastal section, bike opening

Put a limit on the rolling road efforts

The steady climbs along Marine Drive offer breathtaking coastal scenery and invite pushing for it. Pace by effort instead.

Cap opening effort. Fuel early.

Gqeberha coast, bike return

Avoid defending average speed into the wind

Repeat the first loop's effort and finish planned nutrition before the beachfront run.

Stay patient. Finish planned nutrition.

Beachfront and Happy Valley, run opening

Let the first kilometres settle without rushing

Let the first beachfront loop feel easy, not fast.

Easy first aid station. Check posture.

Beachfront championship finish

Run the last part at the effort you've earned

Only progress once the first loop, including the Happy Valley incline, has held together.

Stay tall on the incline. Choose the last move late.

What to check in race week

Check the 2027 Hobie Beach swim entry, Marine Drive bike circuit and waterfront or Happy Valley run laps. This is the 70.3 championship, not the shorter 5150 race. Confirm separate transitions, closures, aid and sea conditions before setting split points.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: sea navigation, measured coastal power and disciplined running by the beachfront have been trained as one half-distance performance.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Gqeberha.
