IRONMAN 70.3 Michigan.
Race Frankfort on your terms.

Betsie Bay starts the day close to transition. River Road and M-22 then change the riding rhythm before two run laps between Frankfort and Elberta. Find the finish range you can support across those turnarounds, rather than judging the day by one fast stretch.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Frankfort could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

The return leg needs the same legs as the outward one.

The bike opens with a River Road out-and-back before heading north on M-22 towards Esch and Indian Hill Roads. Changing direction changes what your speed tells you; use effort to arrive ready for the repeated crossings around Betsie Bay.

Betsie Bay

Read the bay before committing to the pace.

The Betsie Bay swim starts and finishes close to transition. Sight the marked course as you settle your breathing; protected water is not a promise of an easy swim.

Choose space for your stroke. Sight before each turn.

River Road, then M-22 north

Settle before the longer northern section.

The map first takes you onto River Road and back, then north on M-22. Use the early turnaround to settle your handling and effort. On the northern rises, change gear before the cadence drops rather than forcing the pedals.

Brake before the turnaround. Shift early on the rises.

Esch and Indian Hill Roads to Frankfort

Let the turnaround change speed, not ambition.

The northern section follows Esch and Indian Hill Roads before turning back towards Frankfort. Wind and gradient can change your speed after the turn. Keep the effort sustainable and fuel on clear stretches before the dismount.

Do not chase the outward speed. Complete fuelling where handling allows.

Betsie Valley Trailway to Elberta

Learn the turns with your effort under control.

The mapped run uses the Betsie Valley Trailway, town streets and the route into Elberta. Shorten your stride for the turnaround by the water and resume your rhythm gradually. Let the first lap show you what the ride left in your legs.

Hold effort through the turns. Check breathing after the bay crossing.

Second bay lap to Main Street

Recognise the finish approach before racing it.

Passing transition first sends you into another bay lap. On the last return, the finish approach continues towards Fr. Marquette Circle and Main Street. Check the latest signs, then build effort only while your stride and breathing remain controlled.

Know the lap and finish directions. Lift effort gradually on the last return.

What to check in race week

Check the next-edition maps against the River Road and northern bike turnarounds. Walk the swim exit and your rack access, then check the Elberta turnaround and the Main Street finish approach. Look at bay conditions, wind on both bike directions and the forecast temperature; confirm aid locations before deciding what to carry.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: I would practise changing gear early on the M-22 rises and holding effort after a turnaround, when the same road can feel different. A brick run with repeated turns helps you learn to settle after the bike without chasing every pace fluctuation around the bay.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Frankfort.
