What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Coachella Valley could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

The raceway is a section of the day, not its finish.

The bike carries you from Lake Cahuilla through Thermal Raceway towards Silver Rock. Keep that change of setting inside your pacing plan, so the two golf-resort run loops are something you can execute rather than endure.

Lake Cahuilla · sandy beach start

Use the rolling entry to find a sustainable rhythm.

Settle your breathing from Lake Cahuilla’s sandy beach start, then follow the marked turns at sustainable effort. Check conditions rather than relying on the reservoir to feel calm.

Self-seed honestly. Settle into rhythm.

County roads and Thermal Raceway

Keep the effort steady when the setting changes.

Settle into your riding position on the county roads out of Lake Cahuilla. When you reach Thermal Raceway, keep the same target effort and look through the turns. A change of setting is no reason to surge.

Watch the watts, not the speed. Fuel early.

La Quinta toward Silver Rock

Arrive ready for two loops on foot.

As the ride heads through La Quinta towards Silver Rock, keep fuelling on clear sections where you can handle the bike safely. Ease out of the riding position before transition and resist a late push to improve the bike split.

Stay aero. Finish planned nutrition.

Silver Rock cart paths · first loop

Set a pace you can repeat through the resort.

On the Silver Rock cart paths, let the turns interrupt your pace without interrupting your effort. Start below the urge to chase a split, then check your breathing once you have settled into the first loop.

Easy first aid station. Check posture.

Second loop to Silver Rock Park

Increase effort only while you can hold it to the park.

The second circuit uses the paths you have already learned. If the first loop was controlled and you are still taking fuel comfortably, build effort gradually. Keep enough control to negotiate the turns on the way to Silver Rock Park.

Stay tall. Choose the last move late.

What to check in race week

Confirm the rolling swim entry at Lake Cahuilla, the latest Thermal Raceway routing and your transition access at Silver Rock. Check wind, water conditions, temperature and aid provision close to the race, then rehearse your fuelling and cooling choices for those conditions.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: Practise a steady flat-road ride that stays controlled through a distinctive section, followed by repeated running on paved paths. Build a simple transition routine and a run effort you can hold after the bike, even when the scenery and spectators encourage a faster opening.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Coachella Valley.
