IRONMAN 70.3 Gulf Coast.
Your best day in Panama City Beach.

The water can change your plan before the clock has properly started. Once ashore, Gulf Coast looks quick on paper: one bike lap, then three passes through the coastal streets. The challenge is resisting the urge to take every easy second early.

What could you race?

I’m Tom, the coach behind Sense Endurance Coaching. Tell me where you are now and I’ll show you what a strong day in Panama City Beach could look like.

Let’s build your race

Let’s build your race.

Your age and race category help me estimate where that performance could place you. They don’t determine how fast I think you can race.

Change units

A fast road is not permission to ride harder.

On the 2026 layout, a Gulf swim leads to one inland bike loop and three passes through the streets near the beach. The course can feel wonderfully quick once you're on land. Keep that feeling from turning into too much power early, because every run lap will ask for the same legs.

Gulf of Mexico

Watch the water, then find your stroke.

Set your rhythm on the one-loop open-water course and sight deliberately. Surf and current are day-of conditions, not dependable help.

Seed for your real ability. Sight and breathe before lifting effort.

Front Beach Road and Highway 79

Make a fast opening feel ordinary.

Leave the coastal transition calmly and settle on the faster stretches before Highway 79. Ride your sustainable number even when the road rewards more.

Build aero rhythm. Start your fuelling plan.

Return towards Edgewater

Fuel before the last easy kilometres.

Return towards Edgewater without trying to lock in the average speed. Eat while you still can and arrive ready to stand upright and run.

Keep effort steady. Drink ahead of transition.

Panama City Beach streets, first lap

Let the beach run become a half-marathon.

Use the first pass through the coastal streets to find breathing, cadence and an aid-station routine you can repeat.

Keep the first kilometres under control. Take the planned aid.

Middle Beach Road and Front Beach Road

Repeat the effort before you raise it.

A familiar turn is not a reason to accelerate. Check your cooling and fuelling while you can still make small corrections.

Check how you feel at each aid station. Do not chase the clock.

Final coastal lap to Edgewater

Race the last pass, not the first.

If breathing and stride remain composed, raise effort gradually through the final pass and commit when the finish is close.

Lift only when sustainable. Run through the line.

What to check in race week

Check the surf, currents and beach flags close to race morning, along with the swim entry, exit and Edgewater transition. Use the final bike road closures and three-lap run route rather than assuming every Highway 79 turn and aid station is unchanged for 2027.

Build the legs.
Practise the decisions.

A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: I would prepare a long, disciplined aero effort that still leaves your stomach able to take fuel, then rehearse an unhurried first run lap. Gulf Coast can flatter your bike split; the useful result is the pace you can repeat when you pass the same run streets a third time.

I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Panama City Beach.
