IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga. Your best day in Chattanooga.
A quick split down the Tennessee River can be a great start. The ride south into Georgia's rollers and the downtown run will still ask you to do the work yourself. Don't spend the river's gift twice.

The course behind your race
The river gives you momentum. The hills ask for judgment.
The earlier Chattanooga swim runs about 1.4 miles downstream, longer than the usual 70.3 swim. Then Chickamauga's rolling roads ask you to limit the surges before the Riverwalk and Northshore run. Keep the unusual swim distance in your forecast and the hills inside your power limit.
01Tennessee River
Take the current, not the bait.
The earlier 1.4-mile Tennessee River swim is longer than an ordinary 70.3 opening. Settle into the downstream current and sight steadily; free speed is not a reason to sprint.
Check the final swim distance. Hold a sustainable stroke.
02South of Chattanooga
Find your bike legs before Georgia.
Leave Chattanooga without chasing back any seconds the river did not give you. Start eating and settle at a pace that can survive the Georgia rollers.
Respect the early effort cap. Start fuelling.
03North Georgia and Chickamauga
Cap the rollers before they add up.
On the rolling roads through the Chickamauga area, shift early and let speed vary. A small overreach on each rise becomes a large debt by the run.
Cap each rise. Fuel between changes of grade.
04Return towards Ross's Landing
Make the last bike miles uneventful.
Use the later riding to restore rhythm, drink and prepare to run. Do not make the final kilometres a time trial.
Return to planned effort. Prepare for the first run minutes.
05Tennessee Riverwalk and Northshore
Run the first stretch by feel.
The downtown riverfront and bridge approaches can invite early enthusiasm. Hold a pace you could repeat after the next aid station.
Settle after transition. Use the first aid stations.
06Downtown riverfront
Only chase pace when it is yours.
If the legs still respond, build your effort across the closing kilometres. A bridge detour or revised run lap can change the landmarks, not the pacing decision.
Check breathing before progressing. Finish with control.
What to check in race week
Confirm the final 2027 Tennessee River swim distance and entry, especially if it differs from the usual 1.9 km. Check the Georgia turns, bridge access, run aid and local conditions. Make your bike pacing plan for the actual swim distance shown beside the predictor, not for a generic half.

Prepare for Chattanooga
Build the legs. Practise the decisions.
A finish range gives you something to work towards. The preparation is specific to this race: I would train the ability to keep power from spiking over repeated Georgia rises, then practise settling into a run when the legs still want to ride. The aim is to arrive at the Northshore able to choose your pace, not defend an overambitious bike split.
I’m Tom. With Sense Endurance Coaching, I’ll build that preparation around your life, follow how you respond and adjust the work as you get closer to Chattanooga.
