Add only the evidence you have. Every control changes a discipline range, its uncertainty, or an execution-risk explanation.

Swim evidence

Replaces the broad pool-to-open-water assumption.

Bike and equipment

These replace broad mass, aerodynamics, tyre, and power-to-speed assumptions.

Run evidence

A recent effort and honest durability/acclimation answers refine the post-bike run.

Race execution

Transition proficiency changes the T1/T2 range and how wet conditions are treated.

What Hamburg actually gives you

You swim one lap through Hamburg's Inner and Outer Alster starting at Jungfernstieg, ride two urban-and-countryside loops past the Landungsbrücken, the Speicherstadt and out into the Vier- und Marschlande, then run four loops through the downtown streets and along the Alster's western bank. The course gives you constant landmarks and constant crowd noise. What it asks for is the discipline to ride both bike laps and pace all four run loops the same way.

Setting
the Inner and Outer Alster, starting at Jungfernstieg in the heart of Hamburg

A single lap through the Inner and Outer Alster, starting at Jungfernstieg, gives a scenic, low-technicality opening to the day.

Urban and Countryside, Two Loops

Layout
2 loops
Setting
Hamburg's Landungsbrücken, fish market and UNESCO-listed Speicherstadt, then the Vier- und Marschlande and Kirchwerder Wiesen Nature Reserve

Two urban-and-countryside loops past Hamburg's landmarks and into the Vier- und Marschlande reward riding both laps to the same plan rather than treating the first as a sightseeing tour.

Downtown, Four Loops

Layout
4 loops
Setting
the western bank of the Alster and Hamburg city centre via Gänsemarkt, Rathausmarkt and Jungfernstieg

A four-loop downtown course through some of the city's busiest, loudest streets gives constant crowd energy and constant pacing feedback in equal measure.

Where these course facts come from

These facts come from the organiser’s latest published material: swim, 2027 current route; bike, 2027 current route; run, 2027 current route. They describe the character of the course. They do not confirm the final 2027 route.

How I’d want you to race it

One job for each part of this course. The distance markers tell you when the job changes. The course tells you why.

Swim

One clean lap through the Alster

  1. 0–3800 m

    One lap of the Alster

Use the city lake to settle in

A single lap through the Inner and Outer Alster starting at Jungfernstieg gives a controlled, scenic opening. Settle into rhythm and let the city views pass by rather than racing them.

    • Settle by 400 m
    • Breathe on a fixed pattern

Bike

Ride both loops the same

  1. 0 km45 km

    Loop one through the city

Ride the landmarks, not against the clock

The course opens past the Landungsbrücken, fish market and Speicherstadt. This lap repeats, so ride it at a number you can hold twice.

    • Cap effort through the city sections
    • Fuel before the countryside stretch
  2. 45 km89 km

    Into the Vier- und Marschlande

Hold the same effort out in the countryside

The route heads along the dyke and through the Kirchwerder Wiesen Nature Reserve. Ride to your planned power here, since this stretch comes around again on lap two.

    • Ride to power or effort
    • Keep drinking on the exposed dyke sections
  3. 89 km178 km

    Lap two

    Repeat lap one exactly

The second loop retraces the same city landmarks and the same countryside dyke. Match your effort to lap one rather than reacting to how the legs feel.

    • Compare effort to lap one
    • Stay on the fuelling schedule

Run

Pace four laps, not one long sprint

  1. 0 km10.55 km

    Loop one

Don't race the crowd on the first loop

The run passes through Gänsemarkt, Rathausmarkt and Jungfernstieg with a crowd IRONMAN calls incomparable. This is the easiest loop to go out too hard on.

    • Shorten stride out of T2
    • Hold your opening pace regardless of the noise
  2. 10.55 km21.1 km

    Loop two

Use the repeat as an honest check

Passing the same downtown streets a second time gives a clear read on how loop one's pace is actually holding up. Adjust the plan here, not on loop four.

    • Compare loop two to loop one
    • Keep fuelling on schedule
  3. 21.1 km31.65 km

    Loop three

    Protect what's left

The third loop is where an honest first half either holds or starts to fade. Manage the effort rather than the pace if it's slipping.

    • Reassess goal pace honestly
    • Keep taking aid on schedule
  4. 31.65 km42.2 km

    Loop four and the finish

Spend what three honest loops left you

The final loop finishes along the Alster and through the city centre. If the first three loops were paced evenly, this is where you find out.

    • Decide the finish honestly
    • Use the downtown crowd for the last push

What I would keep an eye on

There is no useful 2027 forecast this far out. For now, past race dates give us a point of reference. Closer to the race, the forecast will tell us whether the plan needs changing.

What goes into your range

Your CSS, FTP, weight and run threshold create the first range. Open-water, bike, run and execution evidence can replace broad assumptions. Course data and the historical conditions baseline shape every simulation.

Confidence is built from four inputs

Athlete evidence
Builds with recent open-water, bike and run efforts
Bike setup
Builds with equipment, mass, aero and tyre detail
Course evidence
Partial while the 2027 route is unconfirmed
Race-week conditions
Historical baseline until a forecast is useful
How the model works

It starts with the targets in your Race Card, then samples the parts of a full distance that vary: open-water pace, transitions, bike speed at the planned power, and the drop in run performance after the swim and bike. Repeating that calculation produces a likely range rather than a single heroic number.

The current time calculation uses this race’s published distances, or standard full distance distances where none are published, with the available course headings, elevation and exposure evidence. Weather scenarios vary temperature, dew point, wind, gusts, rain and water conditions together. Unknown route detail stays visible as uncertainty rather than false precision.

It is not predicting your exact finishing time, placing, or race-day weather. It answers a narrower question: given the plan and the information we have, what range of day is plausible, and where is the uncertainty coming from?

Confidence is not a permanent “low”. It is recalculated across four separate inputs:

  • Your evidence: consistent inputs and recent race-like swim, bike, and run results.
  • Bike setup: measured or specified aerodynamics rather than a broad prior.
  • The course: verified distance and route character, including elevation and technical sections.
  • The conditions: a current forecast is more useful than a historical comparison.

It starts low when those inputs are broad. It can become moderate or high as the evidence improves. A narrower range means better information, not a guarantee.

If Hamburg is your race

Your range is built on today’s numbers. The months of training before race day decide what those numbers become.
